BALL x PIT
A gloriously addictive mash-up of brick-breaker, bullet-heaven, and base-builder that's far more than the sum of its parts.
Media
Some games win you over with a premise so odd you have to see it work. BALL x PIT is one of them. On paper it’s a brick-breaker crossed with a bullet-heaven survival roguelite crossed with a base-builder — a description that sounds like three pitches stapled together. In practice, it’s one of the most compulsively replayable games Devolver has published in years.
The bounce
Each run sends you into the pit armed with balls that ricochet across the screen, shattering hordes of advancing enemies brick-breaker style. The twist that elevates everything is the Ball Fusion system: with 60+ balls to find and combine, you’re constantly stumbling into overpowered synergies — a Reaper Ball that can instantly kill, a Time Ball that freezes everything in an area, a Venom Ball that paralyzes. Half the joy is the chaotic discovery of a build that suddenly makes the screen erupt.
The loop is pure dopamine: aim, unleash a wall of bouncing death, watch the numbers explode, and immediately want to do it again.
Building New Ballbylon
What keeps the runs meaningful is the meta-layer. Between dives you rebuild New Ballbylon, placing 70+ structures that grant bonuses, generate resources, and unlock new heroes. It turns a great arcade loop into a long-haul progression hook — there’s always a building to fund or a character to recruit, so even a failed run feeds the bigger project.
Heroes and realms
Each recruitable hero rewires how you play — the Falconer’s swooping spread, the Carouser’s gravity-bending trajectories, the Tunneller’s screen-wrapping shots. Paired with distinct realms (deserts, frozen caverns, savage forests) and screen-filling bosses, there’s a remarkable amount of variety packed into a game that costs less than lunch for two.
The catch
It isn’t flawless. At high intensity the screen can dissolve into a glorious but genuinely hard-to-read storm of projectiles, and the pacing of certain unlocks can spike awkwardly depending on your build luck. Neither dents the core much.
Verdict
BALL x PIT is the rare genre-blender where every ingredient pulls its weight. It’s cheap, endlessly replayable, gorgeous on a handheld, and backed by a developer that keeps adding to it. If you have any affection for roguelites — or just love watching numbers go up — this is an easy, enthusiastic recommendation.

4The fusion system is criminally addictive. 'One more run' turned into 4am real quick.
Plays like a dream on Steam Deck. Perfect pick-up-and-play roguelite.
Didn't expect the base-building to hook me as much as the bouncing. Devolver did it again.
Bought it on sale, already 30 hours in. Absurd value for the money.
