Sun Haven

Most farming sims ask you to pick a lane. Sun Haven refuses. It wants to be Stardew Valley, a fantasy action-RPG, a dating sim, a dungeon crawler and an eight-player co-op hangout all at once — and the remarkable thing is how much of that it actually pulls off. The less remarkable thing is everything around the edges.

Absurdly generous

The headline feature is what isn’t here: there’s no stamina bar. You can farm all day without the game cutting you off, and that single decision changes the entire rhythm. Add sliders for day length, invincibility, pests and weather, and you get a sim that bends to how you want to play rather than the other way round.

The scope is genuinely startling. Four regions — the medieval town of Sun Haven, the elven forests of Nel’Vari, the monster city of Withergate, and the underwater Brinestone Deeps — each with their own recipes, characters and story threads. Twenty-three romanceable characters. Over 30,000 lines of dialogue. Seven playable races, ten starting professions, 130+ fish, 40 crafting stations, and skill trees for combat, farming, fishing, mining and exploration that let you build a character rather than just level one. You can raise cows and chickens, or griffons, phoenixes and werewolves. Up to eight players can share a farm, and your character keeps its inventory and levels across solo and co-op saves.

For sheer content-per-dollar, very little in the genre comes close.

The clutter problem

The flip side is that years of updates have been layered on top of each other without much rebalancing. Systems overlap, progression curves wobble, and the sheer density of menus and mechanics can make the opening hours feel less cozy than overwhelming. Bugs are the more serious complaint: players have flagged glitches — a few of them run-ending — that have lingered across multiple updates. This is not a game that feels tightly tuned; it feels like an enormous, enthusiastic pile.

The stuff around the game

There’s context here that’s worth being upfront about. Sun Haven’s store page currently lists 27 separate cosmetic DLC packs, which together run to well over $100 — several times the price of the base game. The studio’s position is that these are purely cosmetic, entirely optional, and fund ongoing development. Plenty of players find that reasonable; plenty of others see a $25 game with a $100 storefront bolted on.

Beyond that, former contributors have publicly alleged that Pixel Sprout Studios underpaid overseas artists and left their work uncredited, and some players have reported being banned from community spaces for raising it. Pixel Sprout has denied the pay allegations, stating publicly that everyone receives competitive US-based pay, and has since added a community contributors section to its site. These remain allegations rather than established fact, and this review scores the game rather than the discourse — but it explains the Steam picture: lifetime reviews sit at Very Positive (around 83% across 21,000+) while the last 30 days have slipped to Mixed (about 62%), with Steam flagging periods of off-topic review activity.

Verdict

Judged purely as a game, Sun Haven is a warm, sprawling, wildly ambitious fantasy farming RPG that gives you more to do than almost anything else in its genre, and its no-stamina, play-your-way design is genuinely refreshing. Judged as a package, it’s cluttered, buggier than it should be three years on, and sold alongside a DLC catalogue that dwarfs it. It goes on deep discount often — frequently around 70% off — and that’s the moment to jump in. At full price with the cosmetics dangling, it’s a harder sell.
